About our Data Centre

We partner with one of the first suppliers in the UK to use free cooling in their data centre making it one of the most efficient data centres in Europe in 2017. The energy supplier used for our hosting at the data centre is certified 100% renewable and doesn't rely on offset schemes or any carbon credits. The energy is provided by Ecotricity, the UK's leading renewable energy supplier.

The managers of our data centre have contributed towards reforestation projects in Devon, Somerset and South Wales and are currently supporting The Alladale Reserve which is North of Inverness.

The data centre uses cold aisle containment and free cooling chillers to make it as efficient as possible.

Cold aisle containment is a relatively simple idea to get the best out of air conditioning units. The hall is set up as a standard hot / cold aisle arrangement however the cold aisles are then sealed off at either end and a ceiling is installed to trap the cold air at the front of the racks. The rest of the room becomes a hot aisle as the air is returned to the air conditioning units, so the room itself will be between 30 and 35 degrees Celcius. The air flowing through the front of all the servers is about 20 degrees Celsius.

Free Cooling is a highly efficient way of taking advantage of one of the main features of the UK climate. Whenever the outside temperature is less than the temperature of the water coming back from the data centre the outside temperature is used to cool the water. So for most days of the year (and pretty much every night) the chillers are doing very little.
